Paul Ricard FP1: Hamilton heads Mercedes one-two

Did they have the updated engine? Did they not? Whatever the case Mercedes dominated the first free practice session of the French Grand Prix weekend at Circuit Paul Ricard with Lewis Hamilton heading teammate Valtteri Bottas at the top of the timing screens. The session came to a fiery end, with a few minutes to run Marcus Ericsson lost control and hit the wall in Turn 10 upon which the rear right of his Sauber caught alight. It took a long time for the Swede to wriggle out of the car, perhaps unaware of the fire but pretty ominous viewing. With no running after the late incident, it was Hamilton's best lap time of 1:32.231 which topped the timing screens, a little over a tenth faster...
