Rosberg fastest as first practice session halted by punctures
Mercedes' Nico Rosberg set the fastest time in free practice 1 ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, but the major talking point was of three separate tyre failures; two for Felipe Massa, and one for Kevin Magnussen. Sebastian Vettel was first out on track for a reconnaisance lap, shortly followed by Rio Haryanto, however, it took ten minutes for a time to be posted; Lewis Hamilton popping up with a time of 1:38.802 on the medium-compound tyres. The McLaren cars were the first to strap on a set of super-soft tyres in anticipation of wet weather on Saturday, Button posting fourth-best time, and Alonso - who is still yet to be cleared for the race on Sunday - fifth-best.
