Bite-size tech: McLaren MP4-31 brake ducts

An increase in tyre pressures by Pirelli, to marginalise the extra performance that has been gained, is being met by all with a redesign of the brake components and ducting. In the case of McLaren, the Woking squad made changes last time out in Russia and now further modifications are abound in Spain. The openings, which were increased in size for Sochi (inset), have been completely cut away for Spain, with the crossover pipework fully exposed to the wheel rim. This changes the way in which the heat is radiated into the wheel, affecting the tyre's bulk temperature, too.
